All images above have been taken on a tripod using a cable release. At each aperture, three images have been made and the best of the series was chosen. I tested three Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D lenses and the results are almost the same: At 28mm focal length, contrast and sharpness for apertures between f/2.8 and f/4 could be better. The images fall short of being tack sharp and show very slight color fringing with the Fuji S2 camera. In fact, the optical performance at f/2.8 and f/4 is at the same level as with the much cheaper Nikon AF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D at f/4! Overall, the images at f/2.8 - f/4 are acceptable but one would expect more from a professional Nikon lens. For focal lengths between 50mm and 70mm it's a different story: The Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D lens is visibly sharper and delivers more contrast at f/2.8 and f/4 than the Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D lens at f/4. For apertures above f/5.6 the two lenses perform about equally well over all focal lengths.
