Fig.23 - The old Spitallamm or Spittellamm dam on Lake Grimsel (Grimselsee) was one of the first large arch-gravity dams, a combination of a gravity dam and an arch dam. It was built between 1925 and 1932 and after completion it was one of the tallest dams in the world, measuring 114 meters from the foundation to the crest. In 2019, the construction of a new double curvature dam, which will stand in front of the old dam, started. The new dam will be completed in 2025. On the photograph, the preparations for the new dam can be seen in the rugged mountain wall. The old Spitallamm dam will be flooded and thus preserved after completion of the new dam. The crest of the old dam will stay visible since the new dam will have the same height as the old one. Plans for a further raising of the new Spitallamm dam exist but will likely face resistance.
